Embodiment Construction

[0060] The following description of the drawings discloses various features and options included in various embodiments of a wave power plant according to the present invention. The principle of operation of the invention in its broadest aspects is best understood from the description of the embodiments of Figures 1 and 14-20.

[0061] 1 and 2 show cross-sectional views of a wave power plant 102 comprising a truss structure 104 which may, for example, have a so-called space truss structure. The truss structure also shown in FIGS. 3-5 includes a substantially triangular lower portion and a substantially rectangular upper portion 111 having first, second and third force members 106, 108, 110. The upper part of the rectangle can be used to accommodate hydraulic and electrical equipment, including hydraulic drive and lifting systems, and it can also be used as a narrow walkway or pedestrian bridge for maintenance personnel. As shown in Figures 3-5, the rectangular upper part ext...

Abstract

A wave power apparatus (302) includes a plurality of rotationally supported arms (322) , each of which carries a float (324) at its free end, so that a translational movement of the float caused by a wave results in rotation of the arm. The apparatus comprises power conversion means (128,130) for converting power transmitted from the wave to the arms into electric power, e.g. a hydraulic system. The plurality of apparatus is arranged in a row such that a wave passing the row of arms causes the arms to successively pivot with a mutual phase shift. Thereby, an even power output may be achieved, and the need for frequency converters may be reduced or eliminated. Preferably, each arm is connected to a hydraulic cylinder (328) of the hydraulic system, whereby a plurality of arms feed hydraulic medium into the hydraulic motor or motors through common hydraulic conduits (180).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an arrangement comprising a wave power plant for converting the wave energy of the sea or ocean into useful energy such as electricity. A particular object of the device according to the invention is to provide a system which can be easily installed and in which a uniform power output can be obtained. Background technique [0002] It is well known that ocean waves constitute a seemingly unlimited energy resource that, if exploited effectively, may be able to solve a significant portion of the world's energy problems. However, despite many efforts to exploit ocean wave energy, to date no commercially successful system has been designed for converting ocean wave energy into electrical energy. [0003] Generally, in the prior art, three different types of wave power plants have been proposed. One such apparatus is disclosed in US Pat. No. 6,476,511 and comprises a plurality of buoyant cylindrical members joined together ...
