Embodiment Construction

[0019] In order to reduce channel estimation noise, the present application discloses a device and method for firstly dividing time-domain channel estimation into different regions. In some communication systems (such as OFDM systems), after (for example) descrambling and transforming the frequency domain pilot channel into a time domain channel estimate, a time domain channel estimate can be derived, which usually has a P number or channel estimation points . Therefore, according to the present invention, the time-domain channel estimation at point P is divided into two regions: the channel active region and the noise / interference region (or noise region). The reason for using time-domain channel estimates to determine the region, as opposed to the frequency domain, is, for example, that channel activity typically occurs temporally in certain parts of the channel estimate, and thus other parts of the channel estimate can more accurately be trusted as noise / Interference reg...

Abstract

Apparatus and methods for use in a wireless communication system are disclosed for reducing channel estimation noise in a device such as a wireless transceiver. A disclosed apparatus includes a processor that determines a channel activity portion and a noise portion of a channel estimation. The processor also determines a threshold noise level based on channel estimate values in the noise portion of the channel estimation. The processor compares channel estimate energy values in the channel estimation to the threshold noise level and sets each of the channel estimate energy values being less than the threshold noise level to a predetermined value such as zero in order to reduce or eliminate the noise. Similar methods are also disclosed.

Description

[0001] Claim of priority under 35 U.S.C. §119 [0002] This patent application claims priority to Provisional Application No. 60 / 713,015, filed October 27, 2005, which is assigned to the present assignee and is expressly incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to apparatus and methods for reducing channel estimation noise in wireless communication transceivers, and more particularly, the present invention relates to methods for setting channel estimates to values less than a determined noise density when those values are less than the noise density. Apparatus and method for setting a predetermined value so as to reduce overall channel estimation noise. Background technique [0004] In certain wireless communication systems, for example using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), channel estimation of received communication signals has a profound impact on system performance. For example, wireless transceiver...
