Problems solved by technology

[0008] However, the UMTS standard fails to specify how to notify the subscribing UE where to retrieve MBMS data after the service is provided
Furthermore, the UMTS standard fails to specify how to control access to the storage location of MBMS data when a large number of users try to access the system to retrieve stored MBMS data at overlapping moments after a large number of users have failed to receive or unacceptably received MBMS data during the MBMS service provision. access
For example, marginal or poor channel conditions may cause multiple UEs to receive MBMS data unacceptably at the same time
Unlike usual attempts to access wireless infrastructure, MBMS service subscribers cannot be denied access to stored data
As a result, additional system congestion may result, and uplink communication links may also become overloaded, not only between users and the RAN, but also between all elements of the RAN that connect users to network elements maintaining MBMS data

Embodiment Construction

[0019] The present invention refers to Figure 1-4 be fully described. figure 1 is a block diagram of a wireless communication system 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention. The communication system 100 includes at least one user equipment (UE) 102, such as, but not limited to, a cellular telephone, a wireless telephone, a personal digital assistant (PDA) having radio frequency (RF) capabilities, or providing RF access to digital terminal equipment (DTE) The digital terminal equipment, such as a laptop computer, communicates wirelessly with a radio access network (RAN) 110 . The RAN 110 includes at least one transceiver, or Node B, 112, operatively connected to a RAN controller 114, which is preferably a radio network controller (RNC). The communication system 100 further includes a support node 116 connected to the RAN 110, and a Multimedia Broadcast / Multicast Service (MBMS) application server 122 communicating with the RAN controller 114 through the suppor...

Abstract

A Multimedia Broadcast / Multicast Service (MBMS) application server (122) in a packet data communication system (100) produces multiple access control parameters that at least partially identify a storage location of MBMS data and that define when a user equipment may access the stored MBMS data. The multiple access control parameters are then distributed to user equipment (UE) (102) subscribed tothe MBMS service. When a subscribed UE fails to receive, or erroneously receives, MBMS data associated with the MBMS service, the subscribed UE uses the distributed access control parameters to determine when and where to access the stored MBMS data.

Description

[0001] Related Application Cross Reference [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 60 / 566,275, entitled "METHOD ANDAPPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING ACCESS TO A MULTIMEDIABROADCAST / MULTICAST SERVICE," filed April 29, 2004, which is owned by the same owner, all of which incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention generally relates to a packet data communication system, and more specifically, relates to a multimedia broadcast multicast service in a packet data communication system. Background technique [0004] The Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) standard provides compatibility with cellular mobile telecommunications systems. The UMTS standard ensures that a mobile station (MS), or user equipment (UE), operating in a UMTS system, can obtain communication services when operating in a system manufactured according to the standard. To ensure compatibility, the standard specifies wireles...
