Embodiment Construction

[0083] Many of the functional units described in this specification have been labeled as modules, in order to more particularly emphasize their implementation independence. For example, a module may be implemented as a hardware circuit comprising custom VLSI circuits or gate arrays, off-the-shelf semiconductors such as logic chips, transistors, or other discrete components. Modules can also be implemented with programmable hardware devices, such as field programmable gate arrays, programmable array logic, programmable logic devices, and the like.

[0084] Modules may also be implemented in software for execution by various types of processors. An identified module of executable code may, for example, comprise one or more physical or logical blocks of computer instructions, where the blocks may, for instance, be organized as an object, procedure, or function. However, the executable instructions of the identified modules need not be physically located together, but may include...

Abstract

An apparatus, a system, and a method are disclosed for concurrently relocating a RAID array. The apparatus includes an identification module, a designation module, and an implementation module. The identification module identifies an availability of a physical device within a donor arrayed storage device to offload a source drive of a relocation enclosure. The designation module designates an available physical device as a target drive and thereby designates the target drive and the source drive as a linked pair. The implementation module implements a mirroring relationship between the targetdrive and the source drive. The apparatus, system, and method provide a dynamic relocation of the raid array, minimizing system downtime and maximizing efficient utilization of system resources.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to arrayed storage devices, and in particular to dynamically relocating a RAID array from one physical location and / or system to another while maintaining concurrent I / O access to the system's entire data set system. Background technique [0002] Today, computer systems continue to experience more dramatic improvements in processing power and overall system performance than ever before. However, as computing power has grown orders of magnitude over time, I / O throughput has generally not kept pace. Depend on A technology invented that has helped close this gap between system performance and I / O latency is Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) technology, also known as Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. [0003] An array is an arrangement of related hard drive modules assigned to a group. Various versions of RAID exist, but generally, RAID is a redundant array of hard drive modules. A typical RAID system incl...
