Embodiment Construction

[0031] The embodiment illustrated in the figures discloses a device in which a laser beam is moved in contact with the surface of the skin to be treated in order to sequentially target and destroy hair follicles. The device consists of a laser emitter, a focusing element (here a lens) that ensures that the beam delivers the target energy to the target location, and a drive. In various embodiments, the light beam may be continuous, such that it 'sweeps' the skin surface, or it may be pulsed, such that it moves in discrete steps. The movement of the beam is controlled by one or more of: movement of the lens (as in the shown embodiment described below); movement of the mirror; and movement of the laser emitter. Motion may be achieved by induction motors (as in the shown embodiment); piezoelectric devices, motor mechanisms with transmitted drives; mechanical drives, or any combination of the above.

[0032] In the embodiments described below, a laser emitter is used to direct a l...

Abstract

A hair treatment device for the treatment of the human or animal skin by laser radiation to prevent or reduce hair growth, which device comprises a laser radiation source for emitting a laser radiation beam; beam deflecting means for deflecting said radiation beam across the skin, said deflecting means comprising a lens through which said beam of laser radiation passes, and means for moving said lens to effect deflection of said beam.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to devices and methods for skin treatment and in particular, but not exclusively, to the treatment of human or animal skin with laser radiation to effect cosmetic and / or therapeutic treatments such as hair removal. Background technique [0002] Hair removal treatments using lasers are well known. The laser radiation is aimed directly at the skin and the radiation is absorbed in the hair follicles as well as on the surface of the skin. The wavelength of the laser radiation is selected so as to be absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle, heating the hair to a temperature at which it stops growing. While the incidence of laser radiation on the skin may cause local skin heating, hair follicle heating is more severe. [0003] Lasers remove a target's hairs one at a time with a relatively narrow focused laser beam, which is relatively inefficient and time-consuming. In order to improve the treatment time, many modern las...
