Embodiment Construction

[0027] While all of the figures show a device suitable for supporting a patient's right hand and wrist, it will be understood that a similar device for the left hand is simply a mirror image of what is shown.

[0028] For convenience, dimensions and angles denoted by reference numerals in the drawings are set in the following table.

[0034] The first embodiment of the present invention is as Figure 1-8 Shown is particularly suitable for fixation of undisplaced fractures of the fifth metacarpal. figure 1 The overall length of the shown support member (1) is between 11 cm and 27 cm, and has a maximum width between 5 cm and 10 cm, to accommodate patients of different sizes. In use, it extends along the hand from just above the wrist along the underside of the patient's arm to the ends of the third and fourth fingers. like figure 2 , 3 and 4, the support member (1) has a generally "L" sha...

Abstract

The invention relates to an orthopedic support device for supporting, protecting and immobilizing part of a hand, and particularly, but not exclusively, to a 5th metacarpal fracture splint. The device comprises a preformed support member (1) which, in use, extends along the wearer's wrist and hand and is attachable thereto, so as to provide support with the hand disposed in one direction so that the wrist joint is at a given angle, and the fingers disposed in another direction so that the knuckles are at an angle substantially similar in magnitude but opposite in orientation to the wrist joint and not exceeding 55 degrees.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an orthopedic support device for supporting, protecting and immobilizing a portion of a hand, and particularly, but not exclusively, to a fifth metacarpal fracture splint. Background technique [0002] The hand is made up of multiple bones, all of which are prone to fracture. There are five metacarpal bones that make up the palm, and each metacarpal connects a finger or thumb to a wrist bone. The metacarpals are numbered from 1-5, with the first metacarpal associated with the thumb and the fifth metacarpal associated with the fourth or little finger. Fifth metacarpal fractures are the most common hand fractures. It occurs at the neck of the bone near the knuckle, usually from hitting something or someone, and is therefore often called a "punch fracture". [0003] There is currently no clear consensus in the therapeutic field as to the best way to fix these fractures; although it is widely recognized that some degree ...
