Problems solved by technology

Adhesive films do exist that are suitable for bonding to midsoles, but they do not bond well to vulcanized rubber
[0011] In the prior art shown in Figure 1, it is difficult to place an adhesive film on top of the block 16 prior to curing because the film tends to stick to the rubber, stretch and break during the molding process, by This does not provide a uniform adhesive layer

Embodiment Construction

[0024] The principle of the present invention will now be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings. The prior art of providing a "rubber disc" sized base material and using heat and pressure to form the bottom sole was mentioned earlier. This has been found not to be an efficient method, limiting the number of soles that can be produced. Now, according to the invention, the raw material, eg typically rubber material, is formed with a profile which substantially matches the profile of the mold cavity. In this regard, refer to figure 2 and 2 a. especially in figure 2 , it can be easily seen that the stepped profile of the raw material 20 is substantially the same as that of the mold cavity. exist Figure 2A , the raw material is shown as separate layers 20A to fill the mold cavity. The number and size of the layers 20A depend on the thickness of the various parts of the sole. figure 2 A one-piece profile die cut to the shape of the bottom sole is sho...

Abstract

An apparatus and associated method of making a molded article including providing a mold that defines a mold cavity having a predetermined profile. A rubber base material is in the mold cavity. The rubber base material is constructed and arranged to have a profiles that substantially matches the profile of the mold cavity. An adhesive film is disposed over the rubber base material. Energy is applied across the mold so as to heat and vulcanize the rubber base material while concurrently adhering the adhesive film to the rubber base material.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to molding methods and related apparatus, and more particularly to an improved method and related apparatus particularly suited for the manufacture of rubber soles for boots or shoes. Background technique [0002] A transfer molding apparatus known in the art for producing plastic parts includes top and bottom electrodes, and top and bottom molds disposed therebetween. The top and bottom molds define a mold cavity into which plastic material can be placed. Preferably, the current field lines are perpendicular to the plastic material at all points along its surface, thereby providing a uniform temperature throughout the material. In addition, the top and bottom electrodes substantially match the structure of the fabricated plastic part such that the distance between the electrodes is constant for uniform heating of the plastic material. In operation, an alternating electric field is applied across the mold cavity, ther...
