Embodiment Construction

[0014] figure 1 is a schematic block diagram illustrating an exemplary IP telephony network 100 . IP telephony network 100 is made up of three main components: (1) voice gateway 10, for example Cisco Internetwork Operating System (Cisco Internetwork Operating System, IOS) voice gateway; (2) soft switch 12, for example Cisco Unified Call Manager (CCM ); and (3) the IP network 20 .

[0015] Softswitch 12 is responsible for coordinating signaling and control services for gateway functions, such as call setup, billing and billing, security and admission control, call routing, and number translation, among others. Gateway 10 is responsible for call origination, call detection, and coder-decoder (CODEC) functions, including at least analog-to-digital conversion and voice packet creation. Gateway 10 enables voice data to be transmitted over IP network 20 . Specifically, the gateway 10 includes a trunk interface (trunk IF) 24, which connects to conventional telephone trunks or anal...

Abstract

A method to identify and report over-utilized, under-utilized, and bad quality trunks and gateways in an Internet Protocol (IP) telephony network includes collecting information associated with a plurality of gateways and trunks on the gateways, as well as correlating the information with network topology and configuration data obtained from a network management system. The collected information may be used to compute traffic statistics associated with the gateways and trunks on the gateways. The method further includes identifying over-utilized, under-utilized, and / or bad quality trunks or gateways, if any; and generating a report to display the over-utilized, under-utilized, and / or bad quality trunks or gateways, e.g., a report to display a subset of the plurality of gateways or trunks for potential upgrade or downgrade. A system to identify and report over-utilized, under-utilized, and bad quality trunks and gateways in an Internet Protocol (IP) telephony network is also claimed anddescribed herein.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to communication networks, and more particularly to methods for identifying and reporting over-utilized, under-utilized, and poor-quality Internet Protocol (IP) telephony networks. Methods and systems for trunks and gateways. Background technique [0002] The process of deploying and operating IP telephony networks and services is often complex and creates several challenges and problems. Companies deploying such networks and services need information to determine which network resources (e.g., voice gateways and the trunks on those gateways) are overutilized or underutilized, and thereby identify which trunks or gateways are prime for the upgrade or downgrade process candidate. Additionally, for a particular trunk or gateway, sufficient data is required as to what additional network capacity is required and when such network capacity is required. This information is critical and meaningful to many organizati...
