Problems solved by technology

While these products provide some protection for the coated fiber as it enters the connector, the transfer from the drop cable to the tube (which typically has an outer diameter (OD) of 1 mm) is not particularly robust
Also, assembly outdoors can be inflexible and / or time consuming

Embodiment Construction

[0024] Reference will now be made to the preferred embodiments, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Wherever possible, the same or similar reference numerals and symbols are used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or similar parts.

[0025] figure 1 is a schematic side view of the type of common fiber optic drop cable ("drop cable") 10 that is part of a furcation assembly as described below. The drop cable 10 includes an end 14, a central axis Ac, and a cable jacket 20 that defines an outer surface 22 of the fiber optic cable. In the exemplary embodiment, the cable jacket 20 is made of polyethylene (PE), although other suitable polymers and / or blends of polymers may also be used. Additionally, the cable jacket 20 may have any suitable shape and / or size for use with the disclosed furcation bodies.

[0026] Although various types of fiber optic drop cables 10 exist, they can be divided into two main categories: buffered and unbuffered. B...

Abstract

Furcation bodies and furcation assemblies are disclosed. In one embodiment, a furcation body includes a channel forming a passageway extending from the front end to a back end of the furcation body. The furcation body may accommodate different styles and / or sizes of fiber optic cables. For instance, the furcation body may be secured to either a buffer tube of a buffered drop cable or a cable jacket of an unbuffered drop cable. Additionally, assemblies may include a furcation tube secured to the furcation member back end for protecting the optical fiber extending from the furcation body and / or a fiber optic connector. Furcation assemblies having multiple fibers are also disclosed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to a furcation body for a fiber optic cable. More particularly, the present invention relates to a furcation body, related fiber optic cable assemblies having a furcation body, and methods of making the same. Background technique [0002] Optical fiber communication has experienced extremely rapid development. In just a few years, the transmission of communication signals such as audio, video, and data has increased dramatically. Also, future developments are planned to improve fiber optic communication technology and expand the network to provide access to a greater number of users. [0003] Fiber optic cables are the backbone of fiber optic communication systems. The fiber optic cable carries optical fibers and other cable components, and the cable jacket protects the fiber optic cable from the external environment. However, there are several different types of fiber optic cables that carry fiber optics to ...
