A method and an apparatus for call management in an Internet protocol (IP) multimedia subsystem (IMS) are provided. The method includes the following steps: establishing an IMS call between a calling terminal and a called terminal (301); sending, by a proxy call session control function entity, a state detection request to its corresponding terminal (302); if the detection result is abnormal, notifying the network elements of the IMS to release the call (303). The present invention overcomes the problem of the call management method in relevant technology that the processing capability and utilization ratio of the IMS network elements are lower and user's experience is worse, which is caused when both terminals of a call do not support the Request For Comments (RFC) 4028 call detection mechanism, thus improving the processing capability and utilization of the IMS network elements under the situation that both parties of the call do not support the RFC 4028 call detection mechanization and enhancing the user's experience.
