Embodiment Construction

[0036] An aspect of the disclosed embodiments is to mitigate the occurrence of blocking artifacts in real-time video signals by using flatness criteria and discontinuity criteria to identify deblocked regions in each frame of the video signal. Additional gradient criteria can be used in conjunction to further improve robustness. Using these concepts, the size of a video file (or the number of bits required in transmission of a video signal) can be reduced since the visual effects of artifacts associated with the reduced file size are reduced. .

[0037] One embodiment of a method of carrying out these concepts includes three parts associated with an image frame of a video signal:

[0038] 1. The step of identifying the deblocking area (DEB), distinguishing the deblocking area from the so-called detail area DET;

[0039] 2. Deblocking the DEB to mitigate the appearance of blocking artifacts in the deblocking region by spatially smoothing; and

[0040] 3. The step of merging ...

Abstract

The present invention is directed to systems and methods in which, for a given amount of data required to represent a compressed video signal, the quality of the uncompressed displayed real-time video, as perceived by a typical human viewer, is improved. Systems and methods herein achieve this improvement by attenuating the appearance of blocks without necessarily having a priori knowledge of their locations. The methods described herein attenuate the appearance of these blocks such that the quality of the resultant real-time video, as perceived by the HVS, is improved.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to digital video signals, and more particularly to systems and methods for improving the quality of compressed digital video signals by separating video signals into deblocking (Deblock) regions and detail regions (Detail regions), and by smoothing deblocking regions . Background technique [0002] It is well known that video signals are represented by a large amount of digital data compared to the amount of digital data required to represent textual information or audio signals. Digital video signals therefore occupy a considerable bandwidth when they are transmitted at high bit rates, especially when these bit rates have to correspond to real-time digital video signals required by video display devices. [0003] In particular, simultaneous transmission and reception of a large number of different video signals over a communication channel such as cable or optical fiber is often accomplished by frequency division multipl...
