Abstract

The present invention provides a chain tightener in which an air discharging groove can be easily machined. A plunger is slidably inserted into a cylinder. An oil supply path for introducing operation oil into a pressure chamber is surrounded by the plunger and a cylinder. A step hole is provided at the cylinder. The step hole is composed of a small-diameter hole part which is communicated with the pressure chamber, and a large-diameter hole part that is connected with the small-diameter hole part. An oil outlet which is branched from the large-diameter hole part and is communicated with outside is provided. A safe valve is provided in the large-diameter hole part. The safety valve is composed of the following components: a sleeve, a valve body which opens and closes a valve hole formed on an end plate, and a valve spring which exerts a force on the valve body. In the chain tightener, a radial clearance is provided between an inner circumference of the large-diameter hole part and an outer circumference of the sleeve, and an outer surface of the end plate is provided with the air discharging groove which communicates the valve hole and the radial clearance.
