The method comprises that: a first and second single boards set a port rate supported by both the first and second single boards; the first single board sends a first auto negotiation message to the second single board according to a common rate, carrying the rate supported by the first single board, thus to make the second single board determine the maximum rate supported by both the first and second single boards based on the rates supported by the first and second single boards and set the port rate as the maximum rate; the first single board receives a second auto negotiation message sent by the second single board according to the common rate, carrying the rate supported by the second single board; and the first single board determines the maximum rate supported by the first and second single boards according to the rates supported by the first single board and the second single board, setting port rate as the maximum rate. The invention realizes auto negotiation mechanism via a message, without support from specific hardware. Meanwhile, the invention allows dynamic rate switching.
