Embodiment Construction

[0031] figure 1 A power and data transmission system according to an embodiment of the invention is shown. The figure includes power and data adapter 110 and a connector system including connector receptacle 132 and connector plug 120 coupled to power and data adapter 110 via cable 124 . This figure and other included Figure 1 All are shown for illustrative purposes only and do not limit the possible embodiments or claims of the present invention.

[0032] The power and data adapter 110 receives the first supply voltage and provides either the first supply voltage or the second supply voltage to the connector plug 120 via the optical fiber and DC power cable 124 . In this particular example, power and data adapter 110 receives power at power terminals 112 . The power terminals 112 may be arranged to receive AC power from a conventional wall outlet or other suitable source. In other embodiments of the invention, the power and data adapter 110 may receive power from a car ...

Abstract

The present invention relates to circuits, apparatus, and methods, and provides a connector system that can supply both power and data to a mobile computing or other type of device using a single connection. Further examples also provide a power and data adapter that can provide power and data to a mobile computing device using a single cable. Further examples provide an easy disengagement when a cable connected to the connector is pulled. One such example provides a magnetic connector that uncouples without binding when its cord is pulled. Another example prevents power from being provided at a connector insert until the connector insert is placed in a connector receptacle.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates to magnetic connectors with optical signal paths. [0002] Background technique [0003] Mobile computing devices have become very common over the past few years. Users choose these devices not only for their portability, but also as replacements for their traditional computers. These mobile devices are thus used in both situations, as active computing replacements and as desktop computer replacements. As replacements for desktop computers, these portable computers must meet two requirements. [0004] The first of these needs is the ability to operate throughout the length of the working day. Unfortunately, this exceeds current battery capacity; thus the laptop needs to be plugged into a power source for at least part of the day. The second requirement to be met is the ability to transfer data over the physical connection. [0005] Currently, meeting these two needs requires at least two connections to the mobile...
