Embodiment 1

[0120] A multilayer polymer sheet having dimensions of 25 inches wide and 35 inches long was coextruded to have the following structure:

[0121] base layer 0.168 inches thick

[0122] Cover 0.019 inches thick

[0123] A 0.168 inch thick TPO base layer (Developmental Performance Polymer D 500) was coextruded with a 0.019 inch thick cap layer comprising gloss resin, examples of which are shown in Table 4. Sheet samples were thermoformed on an AVT shuttle thermoformer. Each sheet was placed in the jaws of an AVT thermoformer and clamped on all four sides. Next, the clamped sheet was positioned in the heating station of the AVT thermoformer, where the sheet was heated by a ceramic infrared radiant heater at 2.2°F / second.

[0124] Drape Speed, as indicated in Tables 4 and 5, represents the time in seconds it takes for the heated sheet to sag a selected distance. The "selected distance" is the vertical distance between the first position (3.25 inches below the clamp) and the se...

Abstract

The present disclosure is directed to polymeric compositions which form gloss resins suitable for thermoforming applications. The polymeric compositions include a reaction product composed of a clarified random propylene / alpha -olefin copolymer, a coupling agent, and optionally an elastomer. Methods for adjusting the melt flow rate of the gloss resin are also disclosed. Adjustment of the gloss resin melt flow rate advantageously enables scrap thermoplastic material containing the gloss resin to be recycled in a thermoforming operation.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application 61 / 102,212, filed October 2, 2008, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Background of the invention [0003] The present invention relates to thermoplastic polyolefin ("TPO") compositions that provide a gloss finish to thermoformed articles. [0004] The use of TPOs in thermoforming applications is known. Thermoforming typically involves heating an extruded film or sheet of TPO at or above the softening temperature of the TPO. The softened sheet is conformed along the contours of the mold using pressure provided from vacuum, air pressure, and / or mechanical suction. The mold is used to form molded articles. Thermoforming with matching dies places the softened sheet between two cooperating dies. The formed article is cooled, removed from the mold, and trimmed (if necessary). [0005] In a typical thermoforming operation, as much as 60...
