Embodiment Construction

[0034] Embodiments of the presently disclosed fasteners and fastener applications for delivering the fasteners into body tissue during surgical procedures are described in detail with reference to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer to The same or corresponding components in each figure. As used herein, the term "distal" refers to the portion of the surgical stapling instrument or components thereof that is farther from the user, while the term "proximal" refers to the portion of the surgical stapler or components thereof that is closer to the user.

[0035] A continuous screw fastener and applicator are disclosed as shown in the accompanying drawings, which are included for purposes of illustration and not limitation. The helical fastener has a high retention surface area and the applicator has a simple design and serves to dispense the helical fastener into body tissue without substantially deforming the fastener, only from one direction into the organizatio...

Abstract

A surgical fastener for delivering into body tissue during a surgical procedure is disclosed. The surgical fastener includes a continuous helical coil having a proximal end and a distal end. The continuous helical coil has a cross-section with at least five sides. A first helical coil section is located at the distal end. A tapered point extends from the first helical coil. A central passage that passes through the center of the fastener has a non-circular shape. The central passage defines a longitudinal axis. The continuous helical coil has a profile transverse to the longitudinal axis. The profile is non-circular. A tail is located at the proximal end of the continuous helical coil.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit and priority of US Provisional Application Serial No. 61 / 348,356, filed May 26, 2010, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] This application relates generally to surgical fasteners and applicators associated therewith, and in particular to surgical fasteners and related appliers for surgically fastening material to tissue, such as for use with mesh ) hernia repair. Background technique [0004] Surgical fasteners are used to eliminate the need for sutures, which are often time consuming and inconvenient. Surgical fasteners do in seconds what would take many minutes to suture, reducing surgical time and trauma to the patient. For example, in hernia repair procedures, weakened areas of the abdominal wall can be reinforced with a synthetic mesh. In such examples, surgical fasteners in the form of helical fasteners may be used instead of o...
