[0041] The present invention relates to a system and method for tracking at least one object through a network of smart cameras as defined above. These smart cameras (S) have known geographic positions and each comprise data processing means (S1), image acquisition means (S2) implementing at least one algorithm (AS, AD, AF) for tracking an object or objects and communication means (S21). A network of cameras (S) makes it possible to cover at least one geographical area, called a zone (Z), where collaborative processing by the network of cameras allows efficient surveillance at low cost, especially using cameras with limited computing resources and capabilities. Communication means may be wired or wireless. Preferably, the invention will be implemented in a network of autonomous cameras (ie without the need for a higher level system) that implements the invention in a coordinated manner. The processing means is reconfigurable according to changes in the camera cluster.
