Problems solved by technology

These bends may exert lateral forces on the pipe section which apply stress and may eventually cause fatigue and failure
Additionally, water hammer effects and vibrations on these 90° joints can further weaken the connection and cause premature failure

Embodiment Construction

[0036] Reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in particular to figure 1 , which shows a schematic simplified diagram of the pipeline system, which is generally indicated as 10 . The system 10 of this example embodiment is a hot water supply system, such as may be used in a building to supply hot water. In the example embodiment, water is supplied through inlet line 12 from a supply source. Inlet line 12 may come from a city water source or other suitable water source. An inlet line 12 supplies water to a water heater unit 14 . The water heater means 14 is operative to heat water supplied thereto through the inlet line 12 to a temperature significantly above ambient temperature. For example, in some embodiments, water heater assembly 14 may heat water to a temperature of 80°F to 120°F above ambient temperature.

[0037] Water leaves the water heater unit through outlet line 16 . Outlet line 16 supplies elevated temperature water through one or more standp...

Abstract

A piping system for hot water-based fluid substantially above ambient temperature (10) includes at least one horizontal pipe run (20, 22). Each horizontal pipe run includes at least one flexible expansion loop (40, 42). Each flexible expansion loop is comprised of a unitary flexible body (70) which includes opposed generally linear end portions (72, 74). Curved portions of the flexible expansion loop (76, 78, 80, 82) are curved and extend transversely away from the common axis (48) of the horizontal pipe run. The flexible expansion loop is operative to accommodate changes due to the thermal expansion, water hammer and vibration while being more compact than conventional expansion loops.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to flexible pipe and tubular conduits, which may be classified in US Class 138 and subclass 118. Background technique [0002] Many types of piping materials will expand as the temperature of the fluid material being carried increases, and will likewise contract as the temperature of the piping system and material cools. The amount of expansion depends on the coefficient of thermal expansion of the pipe material and the temperature change of the conveyed fluid material. Measures must therefore be taken to accommodate the movement of the pipe due to thermal expansion and contraction. [0003] A common situation where thermal expansion effects must be accommodated is in hot water delivery systems. This includes, for example, systems that deliver heated drinking water from water heaters to plumbing fixtures in homes, hotels, offices, factories or other buildings. Another common use where thermal expansion effects must be addresse...
