[0019] overview

[0020] This Summary describes architectures and techniques for providing expressive avatars for various applications. For example, the techniques described below may allow a user to represent himself or herself as an avatar in applications such as chat applications, gaming applications, social networking applications, and the like. Additionally, these technologies may allow the avatar to express a range of emotional states with realistic facial expressions, lip sync and head movements to communicate with another user in a more interactive manner. In some examples, the expressed emotional state may correspond to an emotional state expressed by the user. For example, through the avatar, a user can express a feeling of pleasure when entering text into an app, and in response, the avatar's lips can be turned up to show the avatar's mouth smiling as it speaks. By animating the avatar in this manner, other users viewing the avatar are likely to respond accordingl...

Abstract

The invention discloses a real-time animation for an expressive avatar. Techniques for providing real-time animation for a personalized cartoon avatar are described. In one example, a process trains one or more animated models to provide a set of probabilistic motions of one or more upper body parts based on speech and motion data. The process links one or more predetermined phrases that represent emotional states to the one or more animated models. After creation of the models, the process receives real-time speech input. Next, the process identifies an emotional state to be expressed based on the one or more predetermined phrases matching in context to the real-time speech input. The process then generates an animated sequence of motions of the one or more upper body parts by applying the one or more animated models in response to the real-time speech input.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to somatosensory technology, and in particular to a technology for providing real-time animation for personalized cartoon avatars. Background technique [0002] An avatar is a representation of a person in a cartoon-like image or other type of character with human characteristics. Computer graphics present an avatar as a two-dimensional icon or a three-dimensional model, depending on the application scenario or the computing device providing the output. Computer graphics and animation create moving avatar images on a display of a computing device. Applications that use avatars include social networking, instant messaging programs, video, games, and more. In some applications, avatars are animated using sequences of multiple images that are played back repeatedly. In another example, such as an instant messenger, an avatar represents the user and reads aloud as the user enters text in a chat window. [0003] In some of ...
