Information related to bends on the drill bit can provide useful information to the drill operator. For example, a drill pipe subjected to bending strain when rotated experiences typically varying bending stresses that can cause deflection of the drill bit from its intended course. Thus, information concerning bends on the drill bit can alert the operator to take appropriate corrective action to return the drill bit to its intended path. Sufficient bending loads can cause fatigue damage per revolution. If known, the operator may take corrective action to reduce the amount of bending, which action may include replacing the deformed portion of the drill string. Abstract

Apparatus for measuring deflection imparted to a drill bit performing downhole drilling operations, the apparatus comprising at least three drill collars equidistantly spaced circumferentially around a drill string to which the drill bit is attached of the pit. Four strain gauges are equidistantly spaced circumferentially around each of the pockets to form first and second sets of strain gauges. The strain gauges in the first group are connected as a Wheatstone bridge and the strain gauges in the second group are connected as a second bridge. Each of the similarly oriented strain gauges in each of the pockets is connected in series within a single leg of the bridge such that the output voltage of the bridge is not affected by bending within the drill string. The output of the first bridge is used to determine the bend on the drill bit. Additionally, the apparatus for measuring deflection, mass and torque on a drill bit for well drilling operations may include at least three pockets equally spaced around a drill collar of the drill string to which the drill bit is attached, the Three pockets carry twelve strain gauges equally spaced circumferentially around each of the pockets to form first and second sets of strain gauges.
