[0043] Figure 1a There is shown a free-tipped axial fan assembly 1 configured for use as an engine cooling fan assembly and mounted adjacent to a set of heat exchangers 2 . The set of heat exchangers typically includes a radiator 3 to cool the internal combustion engine, but vehicles powered by alternative sources of energy can include heat exchangers to cool batteries, electric motors and the like. The cover 4 guides cooling air from the radiator 3 to the fan 5 . The fan 5 rotates about an axis 6 and comprises a hub 7 and generally radially extending blades 8 . One of the plurality of blades 8 is shown in a swept diagram, where the axial width is represented as a function of radius. The end of the blade 8 adjacent to the hub 7 is the blade root 9 and the outermost end of the blade 8 is the blade tip 10a. The blade tip 10a is surrounded by a shroud barrel 11a. The tip spacing 12a provides the running clearance between the blade tip 10a and the shroud barrel 11a.
