Problems solved by technology

[0004] However, the feedforward signal 24 generated using amplifiers (eg, 26 ) and resistors (eg, 30 and 32 ) and capacitors (eg, 34 ) are susceptible to process-voltage- Effect of temperature (PVT) changes
Additionally, when the gain of the main amplifier 40 is modified, the feedforward path 14 should be adjusted accordingly, which increases the complexity of the LDO regulator 42

Embodiment Construction

[0020] Various embodiments of the present invention provide apparatus and methods for regulating an output voltage, including a low dropout (LDO) linear regulator with a feedforward path for high power supply rejection. The LDO regulator uses an additional auxiliary LDO regulator with the same amplifier as used in the main LDO regulator to generate the feed-forward signal. The pass transistor in the auxiliary LDO regulator can be smaller than the pass transistor in the main LDO regulator to minimize power usage while providing high power supply rejection by using matched amplifiers in the main and auxiliary regulators . In addition, by using the same amplifier in the main regulator and auxiliary regulator, the adjustment of the amplifier gain is simplified.

[0021] now see attached figure 2 , an example of an LDO linear regulator 100 with high power supply rejection includes a main LDO regulator 102 to regulate the voltage at an output 104 while rejecting noise from a power...

Abstract

Various embodiments of the present invention provide apparatuses and methods for regulating an output voltage. For example, an apparatus is discussed that includes a low dropout regulator having a pass transistor and an amplifier and being operable to regulate the output voltage based on a feedback signal and a feedforward signal. The apparatus also includes an auxiliary low dropout regulator having an auxiliary pass transistor and an auxiliary amplifier. The auxiliary dropout regulator is operable to generate the feedforward signal and is substantially matched with the amplifier.

Description

technical field Background technique [0001] A low dropout or LDO linear voltage regulator is an electronic circuit designed to provide a stable direct current (DC) output voltage regardless of input voltage variations and load impedance. LDO regulators are able to maintain output regulation even for relatively small differences between input and output voltages. For example, when regulating the battery voltage, an LDO regulator can maintain a stable output voltage for input voltages ranging from the high battery voltage down to a voltage level slightly greater than the output voltage. A typical LDO regulator may use a field-effect transistor (FET) as the current-passing element. The FET behaves as a resistor and drops the voltage across its terminals to maintain the desired output voltage. When the load current or input voltage varies, the gate-source voltage of the FET is adjusted by the control circuit to keep the output stable. As long as the FET has a minimum resistanc...
