Embodiment Construction

[0014] Reference is now made to the drawings, wherein the drawings are intended to illustrate one or more exemplary embodiments and not to be limiting. figure 1 A known vehicle air intake system for a vehicle is shown generally indicated by the reference numeral 10 . As shown, the system 10 generally includes an intake duct or tank 14 and a flow path 16 leading to the intake tank 14, typically consisting of grille holes 18a extending through a front fascia or grille 18, a condenser 19, The radiator 20 , the front portion 22 of the shroud provided at the front of the vehicle, and the bulkhead cover 24 are composed. The system 10 generally provides cooler air to a vehicle engine (not shown) from outside the engine compartment, while the air contains moisture and / or ingestion of particles (such as snow flakes) so that it is not drawn into the air box compartment 14. As will be described in more detail below, when the air flow path 16 is required to pass through the bulkhead cov...

Abstract

A bulkhead cover for a vehicle air intake system includes a forward wall defining a bulkhead cover primary port for receiving an air flow admitted through a grille of a vehicle, a first side wall extending from an outer lateral side of the forward wall to an outer lateral side of an intake enclosure, and a second side wall extending from an inner lateral side of the forward wall to an inner lateral side of the intake enclosure. The intake enclosure defines an intake port between the outer and inner lateral sides of the intake enclosure. A bulkhead cover auxiliary port is defined in the second side wall for receiving additional air flow admitted through the grille and thereby reducing snow ingestion through the bulkhead cover primary port.

Description

[0001] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61 / 378,296, filed August 30, 2010, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. technical field [0002] The present disclosure relates generally to vehicle air intake systems, and more particularly to an over bulkhead air intake that reduces snowflake ingestion. Background technique [0003] The air intake system supplies the internal combustion engine with the necessary air to aid in the combustion process. Typical air intake systems either draw air from inside the engine compartment, or from outside the vehicle via external air intake orifices. Systems designed to draw air from inside the engine compartment generally have the disadvantage that the air drawn in is warmer and less dense than the outside air. This reduces the efficiency of the engine compared to using cooler outside air. One solution to the shortcomings of this system is to draw in cooler outside air. ...
