Problems solved by technology

For other channels on a multi-channel ADC arrangement converting lower resolution signals, this may be overkill and waste hardware efficiency, power, etc.
Also, custom multi-channel ADC arrangements are better suited for a variety of different multi-input signals, but can be costly if tuned for a specific application

[0012] review

[0013] Representative implementations of devices and techniques provide configurable multi-channel analog-to-digital conversion. In a multi-channel analog-to-digital converter (ADC) arrangement, each channel of the multi-channel ADC arrangement includes a configurable ADC composed of multiple stages. One or more ADC stages may be operatively coupled with different ADCs (ie, hardware shared) in each of the various modes of operation. For example, a single ADC stage may be a component of a first ADC channel in one mode of operation and a component of a second ADC channel in another mode of operation. Hardware sharing between ADCs provides flexible ADC placement that reduces hardware or power waste in multi-channel applications. The flexible architecture also allows individual channels to be tuned to more closely meet the specifications of individual input signals.

[0014] In various alternative implementations, multiple ADC stages are partially or fully integ...

Abstract

Representative implementations of devices and techniques provide configurable hardware shared multi-channel analog-to-digital converters. Within a multi-channel analog-to-digital converter (ADC), one or more ADC stages may be operatively coupled to different ADCs in various different modes of operation.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to multi-channel analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), and more particularly, to configurable hardware-shared multi-channel analog-to-digital converters. Background technique [0002] Various systems can use an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to convert an analog signal, eg, from a sensor, into a digital signal that can be processed by a computer, processor, microcontroller, or the like. Certain types of ADCs use multiple stages to convert an analog signal into a digital signal. Multiple stages provide a resolution and / or signal-to-noise ratio to match the type of analog signal being converted. For example, an ADC with one or a few stages can be used to convert signals with lower resolution or lower signal-to-noise ratio specifications. Alternatively, an ADC with more stages can be used to convert signals with higher resolution and / or higher signal-to-noise ratio specifications. [0003] Many modern systems, such as th...
