Abstract

A vehicle includes an engine and a traction motor. A clutch is configured to selectively mechanically couple the engine to the traction motor. One or more controllers are provided configured to command changes in the magnitude of current supplied to the motor. The command is made in response to activation of a clutch engaging the traction motor to the engine. The change in magnitude of the current ensures that the speed of the traction motor remains approximately constant during clutch engagement when the speed of the engine is less than the speed of the traction motor.
