Abstract

The invention discloses a bone fixation system comprising a bone fixation instrument (22) and at least one bone fixation member (24). The bone fixation member includes a strap (32) and a locking mechanism (38). The band can be pulled through the locking mechanism to form a loop (55) around the target bone to secure the first and second bone segments in an approximate compressed configuration. The bone fixation instrument is configured to apply tension to a collar surrounding the target bone. The fixation instrument includes a tensioning assembly (70) configured to secure the free end of the bone fixation member to the fixation instrument. The tensioning assembly is also configured to pull on the free end to increase the tension in the loop when the tension in the loop is less than the selected tension.

Description

[0001] Cross references to related patent applications [0002] This patent application is a continuation-in-part of US Serial No. 13 / 019,907 filed February 2, 2011, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] To provide access to certain internal anatomy, such as the heart, during open heart surgery, a midline sternotomy is often performed. A midline sternotomy essentially makes an incision along the midline of the sternum, bisecting the rib cage and allowing the surgeon to move the rib cage in order to provide access to the heart. When performing open heart surgery it is desirable to approach and compress the sternum and to hold the sternal halves rigidly in their approximate position relative to each other so as to prevent movement of the sternal halves relative to each other for weeks after surgery Promotes bone fusion. [0004] Forces acting on the sternum are generated during normal anatomical functions, such as during respi...
