Problems solved by technology

However, because the sharp point must penetrate the epidermis of the skin to obtain valid allergy test results, the sharp point of the skin testing device can cause discomfort for some patients and a lot of pain for others
Discomfort and / or pain caused by the test is distressing to the patient and disruptive to the nurse or doctor performing the test

Embodiment Construction

[0024] While the present disclosure is susceptible to embodiments in many different forms, it is to be understood that this disclosure is to be considered as exemplary of the principles of the invention and is not intended to be construed as exemplary of the principles of the invention and is illustrated in the drawings and will again be described in detail. The broad aspects of the invention are limited to the illustrated embodiments.

[0025] Embodiments disclosed herein are the application of the theory of neurological gate control to help reduce the distress experienced by patients during allergic skin testing. The neural gating theory involves activating nerve cells that block pain transmission, resulting in pain inhibition. This theory of pain confirms that activation of nerves that do not transmit pain signals can limit the transmission of signals from pain fibers and prevent pain perception.

Abstract

An allergy testing system comprises a skin test device having a grip portion for holding the device. One or more legs extend from the grip, and each leg is oriented to interact with a well containing a potential allergen. Each leg has a test head, and each test head has a plurality of elongated spike members. The elongated spike members have a sharp end configured to receive the potential allergen from a well and to puncture a patient's skin. In addition, each test head has at least one touch activator. The touch activator is longer than the plurality of elongated spike members, such that during an allergy test, the touch activator comes into contact with the skin prior to the elongated spike members, causing the touch activators to activate nerve tissue that blocks transmission of pain, resulting in a reduction of pain and / or discomfort during testing.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to reducing pain in skin testing device systems commonly used to apply a test solution employed in allergy skin testing, such as a liquid antigen, to a patient's skin via a skin testing device with a sharpened tip. Background technique [0002] Many forms of skin testing for identifying potential allergens to which a patient may be allergic are well known. A person performing a skin test may apply various test solutions to the patient's skin. To perform this type of skin test, the person performing the skin test typically places the skin-testing device in the test solution so that a small amount of the test solution adheres via capillary attraction to the sharpened tips on the legs of the skin-testing device. The loaded skin testing device is then pressed into sites on the patient's skin in a predetermined sequence. However, because the sharp point must penetrate the epidermis of the skin to obtain a valid all...
