Embodiment Construction

[0013] Figure 8 A prior art inkjet printer 100 is depicted having elements relevant to the present disclosure. For purposes of this disclosure, an inkjet printer employs one or more inkjet printheads to eject ink droplets onto the surface of an image receiving element, such as paper, another print medium, or an indirect element such as a rotating image drum or belt. Although the following references to the use of phase change ink Figure 8 The printer 100 shown in describes systems and methods for identifying the location of creases in a web, but the subject systems and methods disclosed herein may be used in other forms of ink, such as aqueous ink or by jetting ink into a series of Used in printers on media sheets.

[0014] Printer 100 is configured to print ink images with "phase change inks," which means inks that are substantially solid at room temperature and that transform to a liquid state when heated to the phase change ink melting temperature for ejection onto the ...

Abstract

The present invention provides a web printing system that automatically detects the location of creases in a moving web. The web has a number of marked reference positions including an inside position, a center position and an outside position. A plurality of contact image sensors detect the reference position after the web passes through the spreader and measure the inside distance and the outside distance accordingly from the center position. If the medial distance is less than the nominal medial distance, the wrinkle is identified as medial to the center location. If the outside distance is less than the nominal outside distance, the wrinkle is identified as outside of the center location. The machine operator is informed of the fault condition and takes steps to correct the condition.

Description

technical field [0001] The apparatus and methods disclosed in this document relate generally to printers, and more particularly to systems and methods for detecting wrinkling in continuous-fed media inkjet printers. Background technique [0002] Inkjet printers have a printhead that operates a plurality of inkjets that eject liquid ink onto an image receiving surface. Ink may be stored in a reservoir located within the printer. Such inks may be aqueous, oil based, solvent based or UV curable inks or ink emulsions. Other inkjet printers receive ink in solid form and then melt the solid ink to produce liquid ink for jetting onto an image receiving surface. In these solid ink printers, the solid ink may be in the form of pellets, ink sticks, granules, or other shapes. Typically, the ink carrier transports solid ink pellets or ink sticks placed in the ink carrier to the melting device through feed slots or channels. The reservoir receives molten ink and supplies the molten i...
