The message forwarding method includes the steps of: receiving a message by network equipment; inquiring a flow table according to the message when path information does not exist in the message; and if a matched flow forwarding table item does not exist in the flow table, caching the message and sending the message to a controller, receiving a flow forwarding table item generated according to the message and issued by the controller, adding the path information in the flow forwarding table item to the message, and forwarding the message according to the path information. In the message forwarding method in software defined networking, the controller only needs to issue the flow forwarding table item including the path information to first network equipment of a message forwarding path, thus data volume issued by the controller is reduced, and expansibility of an SND is not influenced.
