Problems solved by technology

Non-self-centering devices may not completely seal the defect and may require significantly oversized
Usually for larger defects this type of device is not available
Additionally, self-centering devices can cause damage to the heart if not properly sized
Some devices have sharp edges that can injure the heart, creating potential clinical problems
Some devices contain too much nitinol / metal, which may cause adverse reactions in patients
Several devices currently on the market come in numerous models (multiple sizes available), making it difficult and uneconomical for hospitals and markets to start investing in congenital and structural cardiac intervention programs

Abstract

A device for occluding a hole in tissue or a vessel includes a first flexible wire and a second flexible wire. Each of the first and second wires is made of a shape memory material. each of the first and second wires is shaped into first and second geometric forms such that the first geometric form of the first wire and the first geometric form of the second wire form a first plate lying in a first plane, And the second geometric form of the first wire and the second geometric form of the second wire form a second plate lying in a second plane that is parallel to and spaced apart from the first plane. The first plate and the second plate are spaced apart by a waist formed from two portions of the first wire and two portions of the second wire. Also provided are methods for using such devices to occlude holes in tissue or vessels.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Application Serial No. 13 / 571,046, filed August 9, 2012, which claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61 / 523,175, filed August 12, 2011. The disclosure of the earlier application is considered part of (and incorporated by reference) the disclosure of the present application. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to medical devices, and more particularly to devices for occluding holes in tissue and vessels. Background technique [0004] For the correction of congenital heart defects such as atrial septal defect (“ASD”), patent foramen ovale (“PF0”) defect, ventricular septal defect (“VSD”) and patent ductus arteriosus (“PDA”) defect Cardio-occlusive devices are known in the medical field. Such as figure 1 The PFO, shown at 110 , is a persistent unidirectional, generally valve-shaped opening in the wall between the right atri...
