Abstract

The present invention provides systems and methods for shutting down field devices. A diagnostic system and method for a field device implemented in a safety instrumented system includes: detecting the occurrence of a safety event associated with the field device; in response to detecting the occurrence of the safety event, overriding normal control of the field device to causing the field device to enter a safe state; verifying an override of normal control of the field device; and sending a control signal to cause the field device to enter a safe state.
