Embodiment Construction

[0009] overview

[0010] As discussed above, frame retransmission in conventional wireless systems is inefficient. Embodiments of the present invention improve efficiency by utilizing intra-frame retransmission of erroneous portions of a transmission frame, such as, for example, erroneous symbols. A feedback channel is used by the sender to transmit an acknowledgment (ACK) of one or more portions of the transmitted frame. The receiver monitors the feedback channel and retransmits any negatively acknowledged portions within the same frame rather than within a new retransmission frame. Retransmitting the erroneous portion within the same frame that was originally transmitted improves efficiency. Because the erroneous part is retransmitted within the same frame, there is no need for the transmitter to re-contention the medium, and there is no need for the transmitter to retransmit the complete preamble and header. Instead, during transmission of the frame, the sender inserts a...

Abstract

Implementations for retransmitting erroneous portions within a transmission frame are described. A sender transmits a transmission frame and the receiver performs error detection on portions of the transmission frame in order to determine if any are received in error. The receiver sets up a feedback channel and transmits acknowledgements to the receiver to indicate that one or more portions have been received and to identify any portions that are received with errors. At least some of the acknowledgements are transmitted prior to receipt of the entire transmission frame. The sender retransmits any portions that are identified as being erroneous within the transmission frame.

Description

Background technique [0001] In traditional wireless networks, unrecoverable symbol errors lead to frame retransmissions. Frame retransmissions reduce the efficiency of data communication systems due to media contention overhead, retransmission of packet headers and preambles, and retransmission of portions of data that were correctly received. In a typical IEEE 802.11g implementation, the header overhead can add up to a delay of 52 μs. In addition, acknowledgment timeouts (the time the receiver waits for a frame acknowledgment from the sender before retransmitting the frame), medium contention, and frame retransmissions all add to delay. As a result, the application suffers from performance degradation. There have been some inefficient attempts to address frame retransmissions, in particular by retransmitting erroneous bits only in retransmitted frames.
