Embodiment 1

[0092] Embodiment 1: Discoloration test result

[0093] Composition 1, Composition 2 and Composition 3 remained white throughout the test. Other samples showed colors, in order of discoloration as follows: LY (light yellow, least discoloration); Y (yellow); Br (brown); dBr (dark brown); vdBr (very dark brown); Blk (black).

[0095]

[0096] Table 2 shows that the Conc samples were as good as, or better than, the UC samples when tested under nitrogen.

[0097] Table 3: Sample Color / Temperature in Air Conditions

[0098]

[0099] 23

[0100] Table 3 shows that the Conc samples outperformed the UC samples under air conditions.

Embodiment 2

[0101] Example 2: Antimicrobial Activity / Time Test Results on Plastic Sheet Surfaces

[0102] The matrix plastic was LDPE; the amount of silver compound was chosen such that the theoretical concentration of silver ions in each sample was 50 ppm (by weight) based on the weight of the sample. The storage temperature is 60°C. A Log kill value greater than or equal to 3 indicates effective complete kill of microorganisms.

[0104] sample

[0105] Table 4 shows that the samples of the invention are significantly better than the comparative samples in maintaining antimicrobial activity during storage.

Embodiment 3

[0106] Example 3: Antimicrobial activity test results on the plastic sheet surface after wiping

[0107] The matrix plastic was LDPE; the amount of silver compound was chosen such that the theoretical concentration of silver ions in each sample was 50 ppm (by weight) based on the weight of the sample. A Log kill value greater than or equal to 3 indicates effective complete kill of microorganisms. The storage temperature is 60°C.

[0109] sample

[0110] The inventive samples outperformed the comparative samples.

Abstract

A method is provided for making a silver-containing concentrate. The method comprises the step of isolating the solid materials from a liquid composition that comprises (a) silver cation, (b) a polymer that has pendant unsaturated or aromatic heterocycles, and (c) solid particles having median diameter of 2 mm or smaller.

Description

Background technique [0001] Undesirable microbial growth often occurs on the surface of plastic articles. It would be desirable to incorporate antimicrobial materials into plastics to inhibit or prevent the growth of such microorganisms. [0002] US 7,846,856 discloses polymeric fibers containing an antimicrobial composition comprising a metal complexed with a complexing polymer. The method disclosed in US 2007 / 0006391 involves drying an antimicrobial composition and adding the dried antimicrobial composition directly to relatively large quantities of plastic. It has been found that dry antimicrobial compositions like those disclosed in US 7,846,856 tend to discolor when heated and that they do not disperse well when added directly to plastics. [0003] It would be desirable to have an antimicrobial composition that has one or more of the following advantages: it has a reduced tendency to discolor when heated; it disperses well when added directly to plastics. It would also...
