The invention discloses a fan error detection system and method which are applied to a server. The server comprises a BMC (Baseboard Management Controller), wherein the server and a fan controller are connected through communication pins of the BMC, the fan controller is electrically connected to a fan wall, and one or more groups of fans are mounted on the fan wall. The fan error detection system comprises a potential detection module, an abnormality reporting module, and an abnormality processing module, wherein the potential detection module continuously monitors the pin voltages of the communication pins between the server and the fan controller; the abnormality reporting module detects whether abnormalities of the fans or the fan controller occur or not according to the pin voltages; in case of the abnormalities of the fans or the fan controller, the abnormality processing module reduces the CPU frequency of the server to lower the system temperature of the server. The fan error detection system and method have the advantages that the abnormalities of the fans and the fan controller can be detected at the same time; in case of the abnormalities of the fans or the fan controller, the CPU frequency of the server can be reduced to lower the lower system temperature of the server.
