specific Embodiment approach

[0032] Figure 1A and Figure 1B The distal portion 10 of the flexible insertion tube 11 is schematically shown in two states according to one embodiment of the invention. Figure 1A The distal portion is shown in a deployed, relaxed or straightened state; Figure 1B The distal portion is shown in a folded or bent state. Tube 11 may be used as a conduit and is also referred to herein as conduit 11 . The distal portion 10 includes a distal section 12 that is generally generally cylindrical and serves as the main spine of the flexible insertion tube, so that it is also referred to herein as the main spine 12 . In the relaxed state of the tube 11, the ridges form straight lines. A plurality of generally similar resilient branch elements 14 (also generally generally cylindrical and also referred to herein as resilient branches 14 ) are connected to the distal section. The connection of the branch elements to the main spine is configured such that at any given junction the two e...

Abstract

Apparatus, including a flexible insertion tube, having a distal segment that is configured to be inserted into a body organ. A plurality of elastic branches are connected to the distal segment of the insertion tube at different, respective locations and extend transversely away from the insertion tube at the respective locations. There are one or more respective electrodes disposed on each of the elastic branches and there are conductors traversing the elastic branches so as to couple the electrodes to the insertion tube.

Description

[0001] Cross references to related patent applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application 61 / 938,883, filed February 12, 2014, which is incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to a catheter having multiple electrodes, and in particular to the design and operation of such a catheter. Background technique [0004] Catheters with electrodes are used in a number of medical procedures, such as exploring or manipulating regions of the heart. During these procedures, the electrodes may be used, for example, to inject known currents (typically for catheter tracking purposes), to measure electrode potentials in specific regions of the heart, and / or to ablate said regions. While catheters with a small number of electrodes or even a single electrode can be used for these procedures, certain software algorithms can increase the value of having a large number of electrodes on the ca...
