Embodiment Construction

[0043] One or more specific embodiments of the present application will be described below. In an effort to provide a concise description of these embodiments, not all features of an actual implementation may be described in the specification. It should be recognized that in the development of any such practical implementation, as in any engineering or design project, many implementation-specific decisions must be made to achieve the developer's specific objectives, such as compliance with system-related and business-related constraints, which can be derived from Changes from one implementation to another. Furthermore, it should be appreciated that such a development effort might be complex and time consuming, but would nevertheless be a routine undertaking of design, fabrication, and manufacture for those having the benefit of this disclosure.

Abstract

A system includes a controller programmed to monitor an oxidation state of a three-way catalyst (TWC) assembly coupled to a combustion engine. The controller receives signals representative of oxygen (O2) concentration in a fluid both upstream and downstream of the TWC assembly, receives a signal representative of the measured O2 storage of the TWC assembly from at least one radio frequency (RF) probe disposed within the TWC assembly (14), to utilize a model to generate an estimated O2 storage of the TWC assembly based at least on the O2 concentration in the fluid both upstream and downstream of the TWC assembly, to compare the estimated O2 storage to the measured O2 storage, and to output a control action for the TWC assembly based at least on the comparison of the estimated O2 storage to the measured O2 storage.

Description

technical field [0001] The subject matter disclosed herein relates to exhaust aftertreatment systems for internal combustion engines, and more particularly to monitoring the health of a three way catalyst (TWC) of the exhaust aftertreatment system. Background technique [0002] An engine (eg, an internal combustion engine, such as a reciprocating engine or a gas turbine) combusts a mixture of fuel and air to generate combustion gases that impart driving force to components of the engine (eg, to move pistons or drive a turbine). The combustion gases then exit the engine as exhaust, which may be subjected to an exhaust treatment (e.g., aftertreatment) system that includes one or more catalytic converters (e.g., TWC components, ammonia slip catalysts (ASC) components, etc.) to reduce nitrogen oxides (NO X ), hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and other emissions. However, if the state of health (eg, state of oxidation) is not closely monitored, the effectiveness of the c...
