The process provides a means to forge a reduced-mass billet into a near-net shape and size piston blank ready for further processing to become a piston. Advantageously, the methods disclosed herein permit cylindrical steel billets as small as about 12% to 15% of conventional billets. Furthermore, savings are potentially provided since a smaller starting mass of billet can be used. In one embodiment, the mass saving of a steel billet for a piston in a class 8 vehicle is 1000 g to 1200 g of material.

Abstract

The present application relates to methods for forging piston blanks and methods of forming pistons and resulting near-net shape one-piece piston blanks. The present invention discloses a method for forging a piston blank such that the forged piston blank is in the near net shape and size of the final piston. Bending the flanges to form cooling channels can be accomplished with little or no preliminary machining of core material prior to bending the flanges.
