Embodiment Construction

[0020] Reference will now be made in detail to the exemplary embodiments, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Where appropriate, the same reference numbers will be used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or like parts.

[0021] In this disclosure, a learning-based system and corresponding method for automatic contouring in adaptive radiation therapy is presented. Specifically, a population-based boundary detector and a population-based sparse shape dictionary can be trained. The trained boundary detector and sparse shape dictionary can then be used to perform automatic contouring in the patient's planning image. As more treatment images are acquired, the system can automatically update the boundary detector and sparse shape dictionary to incorporate patient-specific information. Once a new treatment image is received, the system can perform automatic delineation of the organ of interest on the fly.

Abstract

A method for performing automatic contouring in medical images. The method may include receiving an image containing a region of interest and determining a first contour of the region of interest using a boundary detector. The method may include refining the first contour based on the shape dictionary to generate a second contour of the region of interest and updating at least one of the boundary detector or the shape dictionary based on the second contour.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to medical imaging and therapy. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to systems and methods for automatic contouring of medical images during radiation therapy. Background technique [0002] During radiation therapy, patients usually need to take a series of 3D CT images for planning and treatment at different stages of the disease. To generate a new plan, physicians often need to contour the image from scratch, which can be time consuming and also lack consistency with previous contours / plans. Also, during treatment, the shape and position of the outlined organ is often different from the shape and position in the planned image due to changes in the condition of the organ during treatment. Straightforward planning does not always result in precise dose delivery for optimal treatment. Therefore, it is critical to make the automatic contouring method adaptively adjust the contours of new scans on ...
