[0021] In this disclosure, a learning-based system and corresponding method for automatic contouring in adaptive radiation therapy is presented. Specifically, a population-based boundary detector and a population-based sparse shape dictionary can be trained. The trained boundary detector and sparse shape dictionary can then be used to perform automatic contouring in the patient's planning image. As more treatment images are acquired, the system can automatically update the boundary detector and sparse shape dictionary to incorporate patient-specific information. Once a new treatment image is received, the system can perform automatic delineation of the organ of interest on the fly.
