Abstract

A lubrication pump system for an oil-lubricated engine of a motor vehicle is provided, including a pump with an outlet and an inlet. A safety valve is configured having a housing with a multi-dimensional bore having a first diameter portion axially intersecting a second distinct diameter portion. A spring-biased main piston is slidably mounted in the first portion, with a first bridge, metering flow between the pump outlet port and the pump inlet port. The secondary piston is disposed in a second distinct diameter portion of the valve housing bore. The inventive system allows multiple operating modes of oil pressure versus engine speed by controlling pilot pressure, thereby minimizing the parasitic load imposed by the oil pump on the vehicle engine.
