Problems solved by technology

[0004] The methods described above for determining the density or hardness of the material being compacted provide only an indication of the density at the sample location selected for the test
Additionally, the above methods require additional time and effort to be tested by personnel, which may increase costs and reduce the efficiency of the compaction process
Additionally, the above-discussed method of disturbing a portion of a compacted area is undesirable in some cases, such as when compacting tarmac in a parking lot, because disturbance to the surface material can adversely affect the finished product

Embodiment Construction

[0019] Aspects of the present invention will now be described in detail with reference to the drawings, in which like reference numerals identify like elements throughout, unless otherwise indicated.

[0020] figure 1 is a side view of a compactor 100 including a compaction system 102 in accordance with an aspect of the present invention. The compactor 100 can be configured in a variety of different ways to perform various compaction operations. For example, aspects of the present invention find application to landfill compactors that can be configured to have pointed rollers to compact landfill waste, road rollers can be designed to have smooth rollers to compact asphalt in roads or parking lots, other Compactors may be configured to compact soil or otherwise prepare earth for work.

[0021] The compaction system 102 includes one or more rolling elements 104 configured to compact the work surface 106 through rolling contact with the work surface 106 . The working surface 1...

Abstract

A compaction system comprising: a first frame; a second frame coupled to the first frame by an articulated joint; a first propulsion device operatively coupled to the first frame via a first propulsion motor, the first propulsion apparatus configured to propel a compaction system over a work surface in response to power applied by a first propel motor; a compaction roller operably coupled to the second frame, the compaction roller configured to communicate with the work surface a rolling joint to compact the work surface; a force sensor configured and arranged to generate a signal indicative of the propulsive force transmitted through the articulating joint; and a controller operatively coupled to the force sensor. The controller is configured to determine the compaction performance of the compaction system on the work surface based at least in part on the signal from the force sensor.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to compaction systems, and more particularly to surface material compaction systems, comprising measuring force through an articulating joint and configured to determine the compaction of the compacting system based at least in part on the measured articulating joint force. Realistic controller. Background technique [0002] Compaction systems and machines incorporating compaction systems are known for compacting surface material in order to increase the density or hardness of the surface material. Examples of applications requiring surface compaction include construction sites to avoid further natural subsidence of the ground, landfills where waste needs to be compacted to a minimum volume, and asphalt to avoid further subsidence and therefore future cracking of roads or car parks Roads and parking lots. [0003] The amount of compaction of these materials can be monitored to determine when the material is com...
