[0021] The singular forms "a", "an" and "the" include plural references unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. Approximate language, as used herein throughout the specification and claims, may be applied to modify any quantitative expression that can be permissibly changed without resulting in a change in the basic function to which it is related. Accordingly, a value modified by a term such as "about" is not to be limited to the precise value specified. Unless otherwise indicated, all numbers expressing quantities of ingredients, properties (eg, molecular weight), reaction conditions, etc. used in the specification and claims are to be understood as modified in all instances by the word "about". Accordingly, unless indicated to the contrary, the numerical parameters set forth in the following specification and appended claims are approximations that may vary depending upon the desired properties sought to be obtained by the present invention. Abstract

A method for isolation and collection of cell-free plasma by finger sticks that minimizes contamination with genomic DNA from donors. The method includes placing a tourniquet over one of the fingers of the donor's finger to apply pressure, puncturing the finger to create a notch in the finger, and collecting blood from the notch from the notch site. The collected blood is placed on a separation membrane (152), wherein the separation membrane is in contact with the collection membrane (154), and both the separation membrane and the collection membrane are inserted into a substrate (100) configured to provide an overlap (168) between the membranes )middle. Kits and instructions for performing the method are also provided.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is a continuation-in-part of pending US Application No. 14 / 450585 filed August 4, 2014. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to a medical device and consumable, and more particularly to a kit and instructions for separating and collecting cell-free plasma from a finger stick blood sample for genomic testing. Background technique [0004] Typically, centrifugation is used to separate and collect cell-free plasma from blood samples; however, centrifugation is not always available at the point of collection and is inconvenient for small blood volumes collected by finger stick. For small blood volumes, filter membranes can be used to separate and collect plasma from blood samples. In a common approach, a single filter membrane is used for the separation and collection of plasma. In such methods, a blood sample can be applied to one end of a filter membrane, and as the blood sample flow...
