Problems solved by technology

However, the use of biomaterials presents several additional problems
For example, it may be difficult to maintain the position of the biological material relative to the jaws of the staples before and during staple ejection
It can also be difficult to keep the biomaterial in the desired position at the surgical site after sutures are completed
Additionally, it can be difficult to fabricate biomaterials into the desired shape and thickness
Commonly used plastic and molding manufacturing techniques are often not conducive to fabricating thin biolayers for use with surgical staplers
The fragile nature of many biomaterials also makes them difficult to use in surgical staplers because they lack structural support

Abstract

The present invention discloses an accessory material for delivery to liver tissue. In general, the appendage material can be configured to be delivered to tissue by deploying staples from the cartridge body of a surgical stapler. The adjunct material is configured to transition from an unexpanded configuration to an expanded configuration after being delivered to the liver tissue. The appendage material can be configured to include an effective amount of one or more pharmaceutical agents, such as hemostatic agents or tissue healing agents, disposed within the appendage material and releasable from the appendage material for delivery to the liver tissue. The appendage material can expand to apply pressure to the liver tissue to facilitate sealing of one or more ruptures in the sutured liver tissue. Also provided are methods of applying such adjunct materials to liver tissue using a cartridge assembly or an end effector.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to adjunct materials for delivery to liver tissue. Background technique [0002] Surgical staplers are used in surgery to close openings in tissue, blood vessels, catheters, shunts, or other objects or body parts involved in a particular procedure. These openings may be naturally occurring, such as passages in blood vessels or internal organs like the stomach, or they may be formed by the surgeon during surgery, such as by puncturing tissue or blood vessels to create bypasses or anastomoses or by Cutting the tissue during the suturing procedure. [0003] Most staplers have a handle with an elongated shaft with a pair of movable opposing jaws formed on the end thereof for holding the staple between the jaws and for Nail forming. The staples are typically housed in a staple cartridge that can hold rows of staples and is typically disposed in one of the two jaws for ejecting the staples to the surgical site. Du...
