Embodiment Construction

[0015] The making and using of exemplary embodiments of the invention are discussed in detail below. It should be appreciated, however, that the embodiments provide many applicable inventive concepts that can be embodied in a wide variety of specific contexts. The specific embodiments discussed are merely illustrative of specific ways of creating and using systems, subsystems and modules for flexible user equipment identification in communication systems.

[0016] Procedures will be described herein with respect to an exemplary embodiment in a specific context, namely a system and method for flexible user equipment identification in a communication system. Although these principles will be described in the context of a 3GPP LTE communication system, any environment that may benefit from flexible user equipment identification is well within the broad scope of this disclosure.

Abstract

Systems and methods for flexible user equipment ("UE") identification are described. In one embodiment, the method comprises providing a first message from the user equipment (110) to the radio access node (120) to restore the passive user equipment context. The message includes a UE identifier (400) with a flag (410) indicating whether the user equipment (110) is restoring connectivity to the radio access node (120) and for the radio access node ( 120) of the first local UE identifier (420).

Description

[0001] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application No. 62 / 292126, filed February 5, 2016, entitled "SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR FLEXIBLE USEREQUIPMENT IDENTIFICATION," which is incorporated herein by reference. Background technique [0002] 3rd Generation Partnership Project ("3GPP") Release ("Rel")-13 (incorporated herein by reference along with all other Releases set forth herein) includes a RRC") context features. The general idea is that when a user equipment ("UE") session ends and the UE enters the RRC idle state, both the UE and the radio access network ("RAN") maintain a passive UE context. The passive UE context can be reactivated using a simplified recovery procedure. The use of recovery procedures results in fast setup of radio communication resources, which means low latency of the communication system including the UE and efficient execution of procedures therein. [0003] When a UE requests to reactivate (restore) a passive UE context, the UE si...
