Embodiment Construction

[0022] figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a patient monitor according to an embodiment of the present invention. According to this embodiment, a set of stereo cameras 10 connected to a computer 14 by wiring (not shown) is provided. The computer 14 is also connected to a treatment device 16, such as a linear accelerator for delivering radiation therapy. A mechanical bed 18 is provided as part of the treatment apparatus on which the patient 20 lies during the treatment. The treatment device 16 and the mechanical couch 18 are arranged such that under the control of the computer 14, the relative positions of the mechanical couch 18 and the treatment device 16 can be varied laterally, vertically, longitudinally and rotationally, as indicated by the arrows adjacent to the couch in FIG. shown in .

[0023] Therapeutic device 16 includes a body 22 from which a housing 24 extends. A collimator 26 is disposed at the end of the gantry 24 remote from the body 22 of the treatm...

Abstract

A monitoring system is provided for monitoring the positioning of a patient (20) relative to a treatment apparatus (16) that delivers radiation along a radiation path. A model generation module (58) is configured to generate a model of a surface of the patient (20). A comparison module (64) is configured to determine a transformation required to match the generated patient surface model with the stored target surface model. An offset determination module (68) then utilizes the transformation and data indicative of a current position of a treatment apparatus (16) to determine an offset value indicating the offset of the surface of the patient (20) relative to the axis corresponding to the current radiation path determined by radiation, applied to the patient (20), generated by the treatmentapparatus (16). If the offset value exceeds a threshold, an alarm is generated or treatment is terminated.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a patient monitoring system. More particularly, embodiments of the invention relate to monitoring the positioning of a patient and if the patient is found to have moved out of position, generating a warning signal or stopping therapy as appropriate. The invention is particularly applicable to radiotherapy installations and the like, where precise positioning and detection of patient movement is important for successful treatment. Background technique [0002] Radiation therapy involves projecting beams of radiation onto predetermined areas of a patient's body to destroy or eliminate tumors present therein. This treatment is usually given regularly and repeatedly. In every medical intervention, the radiation source must be positioned relative to the patient so as to irradiate the selected area with the highest possible accuracy in order to avoid adjacent tissues to which the radiation beam is harmful. If patient movem...
