Abstract

The present disclosure provides techniques for assigning a virtual international mobile subscriber identity (VIMSI) to a peripheral device associated with a user equipment (UE) based in part on the mobile device identification (ID) of the UE itself. Therefore, a peripheral device configured with a dual radio unit (eg, a short-range communication chip and a cellular radio unit) does not require a separate Subscriber Information Module (SIM) chip to establish a cellular connection independently of the UE. Furthermore, since the peripheral device is assigned a VIMSI based on the UE's mobile ID, the peripheral device also realizes the advantage of maintaining the same phone number as its UE.
