Abstract

A pipeline leak detection system and related method are disclosed for detecting leaks in a pipeline while fluid is actively flowing through the pipeline. The system may include a sensing element coupled to the membrane disposed parallel to or aligned with the axial direction of the fluid flow. The membrane is configured to be stretched into contact with the inner wall in response to suction caused by the leak. Leaks are detected based on the instantaneous output from the sensing element, which is indicative of stretch or strain on the membrane. The sensing element and membrane are coupled to a support structure configured to position the membrane proximate the inner wall of the conduit. The support structure may include a mechanism coupling the membrane and sensing element to the support structure and configured to help distinguish leaks from false detections.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 409,033, entitled "In-Pipe Leak Detection System," filed October 17, 2016, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to in-pipeline leak detection systems and related methods, and in particular to in-pipeline leak detection systems designed for use in pipelines with active fluid flow. Background technique [0004] Pipeline leaks result in significant loss of clean water supplies throughout the world. It is estimated that about 20% of the clean water produced in most countries leaks from its distribution network. Stopping detected leaks saves water as well as energy and resources expended in the production of clean water. Some pipeline leak detection systems are based on acoustic technology, where acoustic sensors are used to listen for leaks inside the pipeline. However, this...
