Problems solved by technology

However, the design of stereoscopic projection systems has not kept pace, and the technology has not yet adapted to the high ANSI contrast ratios that newer generation projectors can produce, which may instead reduce ANSI contrast to levels below or even conventional cinema projectors

Embodiment Construction

[0037]Certain aspects and features of the present subject matter relate to a projection system that uses an internally positioned stereoscopic polarization modulator to direct stereoscopic image content to a display surface while using the stereoscopic polarization modulator to avoid intra-frame contrast degradation. In one example, the stereoscopic polarization modulator is positioned between the spatial light modulator device and imaging optics in the projection system. The imaging optics may prevent a portion of the imaging light scattered by the stereoscopic polarization modulator from being projected by the projection system, while allowing other light (eg, intended light or light passing through the main path of the projection system) to be projected. Doing so may reduce or avoid intra-frame contrast degradation of the projected imaging light that may otherwise occur due to the presence of the stereo polarization modulator. In this example or as a separate example, the p...

Abstract

Projection systems can use internally located stereoscopic polarization modulators to direct stereoscopic image content onto a display surface while using the stereopolarization modulator to avoid intra-frame contrast degradation. In one example, the stereoscopic polarization modulator is positioned between the spatial light modulator device and the imaging optics in the projection system. The imaging optics may prevent a portion of the imaging light scattered by the stereo polarization modulator from being projected by the projection system, while allowing other light to be projected. Doing so can reduce or avoid intra-frame contrast degradation of the projected imaging light that might otherwise occur due to the presence of the stereo polarization modulator. In this example or as a separate example, the projection system may include an attachment between the port window and the projection lens to absorb a portion of the light scattered by the stereopolarization modulator.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This disclosure claims the benefit of priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 62 / 287,184, entitled "STEREO IMAGE PROJECTION WITH HIGH INTRA-FRAME CONTRAST," filed January 26, 2016, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present disclosure generally relates to projecting polarization-based stereoscopic images with improved image quality, where polarization modulation can be used to switch between left-eye and right-eye images while intra-frame contrast is maintained or improved. Background technique [0004] Image quality attributes including image projection for film can be evaluated and specified in terms of resolution, contrast, uniformity, color rendering, white point, and other parameters. Stereoscopic image projection in which polarization, color, or spectral bandwidth is used to alternately encode left and right images perceived by audienc...
