Embodiment Construction

[0013] Referring now to the drawings, which are shown for purposes of illustrating embodiments of the subject matter herein only, and not for limiting the subject matter herein, figure 1 is a schematic diagram of a turbine engine component, such as a gas turbine engine component, that has a common grain boundary eutectic in its metallurgical structure before and after conventional brazing repair methods, which results in grain boundary Melting of eutectics.

[0014] It should be appreciated that under conventional brazing repair methods, when the brazing operation is performed at a temperature above the grain boundary melting temperature of the component, undesired eutectic melting of the grain boundaries occurs.

[0015] Therefore, under the conventional method, the brazing temperature and the heating rate to the brazing temperature applied during the brazing operation are limited due to the presence of the grain boundary eutectic.

[0016] The inventors have recognized the ...

Abstract

A system (10) and method (1000) for structural brazing repair of high gamma' nickel-based gas turbine components (1). The system may include a controller (200) operatively connected to a heating system (100), such as a vacuum furnace, for controlling the heating temperature of the furnace for a specified or predetermined period of time. The damaged part is placed in a furnace and heated to a first temperature, held at the first temperature for a specified period of time, and then cooled to about room temperature. The component is then heated to a second temperature above the first temperature, held at the second temperature for a second period of time, and then cooled again to about room temperature. After cooling, the component may be brazed repaired at a third temperature equal to or greater than the previous temperature for a third time period.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to the field of materials technology and, more particularly, to systems and methods for brazing repair of industrial components, such as components of turbomachine engines, such as gas turbine engines. Background technique [0002] In a turbomachine, such as a gas turbine engine, air is pressurized in a compressor section, then mixed with fuel and combusted in a combustion section to produce hot combustion gases. The hot combustion gases expand within the turbine section of the engine where energy is extracted to provide output power to generate electricity. When passing through the turbine section, the hot combustion gases travel through a series of stages. A stage may include a row of stationary airfoils, known as vanes, followed by a row of rotating airfoils, known as buckets, wherein the buckets extract energy from the hot combustion gases to provide output power. Due to the direct exposure of components w...
