Embodiment Construction

[0040] A rotating main cutter head for a tunnel boring machine will typically have multiple cutter assemblies mounted to the cutter head and positioned to engage the formation, rock and / or soil to be drilled. The number and position of the cutter assemblies will vary from tunnel boring machine to tunnel boring machine depending, for example, on the size of the cutter head and the properties of the material the tunnel boring machine will encounter. The cutter head may also have other devices to facilitate tunneling, such as non-rotating spikes and the like.

Abstract

A cutter assembly for a tunnel boring machine includes first and second housing supports each having a plate portion, an abutment flange and a plurality of spaced apart seats. The cutter ring assembly is mountable in the housing and includes two or more bridge supports including a shaft mounting portion and two end portions abutting respective housing seat flanges. The axis of rotation of the cutter ring is located between and parallel to the housing supports. A separate wedge member may be attached to the housing mount and configured to clamp the end portion of the bridge support to the associated flange. In some embodiments, a removable seat member is disposed between the seat of the housing mount and the wedge member. The housing mount and removable seat are configured to allow linear insertion of the cutter ring assembly into the housing mount.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 508,030, filed May 18, 2017, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. Background technique [0003] A tunnel boring machine ("TBM") is a type of tunnel boring equipment used to form tunnels in various soil and rock formations. Conventional TBMs produce smooth circular tunnel walls with minimal collateral disturbance. As discussed in US Patent No. 8,172,334 to Lindbergh et al., which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety, conventional TBMs typically include a full-plane rotatably driven cutter head that supports multiple cutter assemblies. Typically, a cutter head may have 20, 50, 100 or more cutter assemblies rotatably mounted to the cutter head. [0004] The invention of the rotary cutter head developed by James S. Robbins was the breakthrough that made TBMs efficient and reliable. Initially, Robbins...
