[0214]

[0215] 1. Unless otherwise noted, all treatment rates are based on oil-free

[0216] 2. Ethylene-propylene copolymer functionalized with 3% by weight maleic anhydride and imidized with molar equivalents of 3-nitroanilide; process includes 87% oil

[0217] 3. b-LMA-b-MMA copolymer cross-linked with EGDMA

[0220] 6. Other additives include foam inhibitors, corrosion inhibitors and pour point depressants

[0221] The results obtained from the DW10 lash adjuster test indicate that the lubricating compositions defined by the present invention provide unexpectedly better results than compositions outside the scope of the claimed invention.

Abstract

The invention provides a lubricating composition comprising a low viscosity base oil and a synergistic mixture of a functionalized ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer, a poly(meth)acrylate polymer, and ametal-free anti-wear agent. The invention also provides a method of lubricating an internal combustion engine using such a lubricating composition.

Description

Background technique [0001] Lubricating oils often contain surface-active additives (including antiwear agents, dispersants or detergents) to protect internal combustion engines from corrosion, wear, soot deposits and acid buildup. Sometimes, while such surface active additives provide some protection, they may also have undesired negative effects on engine component wear (in both iron and aluminum based components), bearing corrosion and / or fuel economy. A common antiwear additive for engine lubricating oils is zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP). It is believed that the ZDDP antiwear additive protects the engine by forming a protective film on the metal surface. ZDDP has been observed to have an adverse effect on fuel efficiency in some cases. Therefore, engine lubricants may also contain friction modifiers to avoid the deleterious effects of ZDDP on fuel economy. However, friction modifiers and other additives can also increase lead corrosion. [0002] Furthermore, there...
